For those of you who haven't been keeping up, a summary of the latest goings on in DLand over the past two months is now up on the blog. I've also included a message that's more forward-looking. The blog: https://dlang.org/blog/2021/10/29/dlang-news-september-october-2021-d-2-098-0-openbsd-saoc-dconf-online-swag/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/qie7t5/dlang_20980_released_now_available_on_openbsd/ I'll be putting together a video version this weekend for the foundation's YouTube channel that I should be able to publish by Sunday. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has subscribed there already. We've surpassed 1000 subscribers! With that milestone and our 5,400+ total valid watch hours in the past 12 months, we now qualify for the YT Partner Program. That means we can start using our channel as a low-friction means of raising money for the foundation. We'll apply after DConf Online. That's also when I'll start publishing the Learning D video tutorials I'd originally planned to create a new channel for (which would have been a silly thing to do). I'm also going to start actively looking for people interested in creating quality content for a new playlist, content that the foundation will pay for. So if you have an idea you'd like to turn into a D-centric video, please don't hesitate to let me know.

I've long wanted to do something like this, but it took me a while to get settled into a video editor. I think the YouTube channel is a better vector to spread the Good Word about D than the blog, and I really want to make more use of it. Time is always the downer, though. So I'll be begging for contributed content (like I used to beg for guest posts on the blog) after DConf Online.

If you're not familiar with it, she has a Zoom chat with someone, that person demos whatever they're talking about, and she asks clarifying questions. She records the talk and uploads it to YouTube. Here's an example that would work well for short demos of changes to the language/new libraries/whatever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kylAbEPcadw&t=712s You might have other plans, but it's one way to reduce the cost for yourself and for others.

But the main point for me is that YouTube is always working for us to get our videos in front of new eyes, even when we aren't posting new content. We've been pulling in a nice, steady rate of views and subscribers to our channel since we got all of the DConf Videos uploaded. Contrast that with the blog, where traffic dips very low and stays there, only spiking when we post new content. To keep that level high, we have to regularly publish blog posts. One suggestion I have is that the format of PLTalk by Jean Yang might be a good fit when you want to get others involved. I have pinged or reviewed a few old PRs and surprisingly often that wakes the PR up. It's a very powerful way to contribute. Starting a forum discussion about some specific ambiguity also works fairly well, assuming you provide good examples and constructively ask questions instead of just ranting. And having a PR manager has been a great boon IMO, both when Nicholas was the manager, and now.
