Andrei, thanks for doing this! :) Is kickstarter the only way of pledging? I tried and had to create a kickstarter account, which I never needed. When the process then required *also* to create an Amazon account I stopped. :( Can I send a check or pay by PayPal? Thanks, Ali

supporting won't be counted by kickstarter towards target sum.

Yes, this. If we don't break through the limit, nobody is charged a dime. It would be more complicated to refund checks etc. Andrei

I happened to have a facebook (alternate sign-in) & amazon accounts so it was fairly quick and painless for me. I'll look forward to the results of the kickstarter.

I have been a committee member of the UK AUA (http://www.iua.org.uk) and I know that the best way to get funding is to find good sponsors. That is my recommendation to you, Andrei. - Try hard to find sponsors for the DConf. Perhaps FSF would help or some other open-source funding organisation?

I think that's a great idea. I am, of course, trying to bring in Facebook sponsorship. All - please bring the campaign to the attention of interested entities by your employer: recruiters, managers etc. If you have any contacts that you think I could cold-email, please write me email. In particular, who in FSF would be suitable? Thanks, Andrei

Wouldn't FSF have issues with the reference implementation's back end not being free software?

GDC is free software, and the rights were assigned to the FSF a year ago.

This is going way better than I expected. 1/4 of the money raised in 2 days. I'm not 100% sure I will be able to come yet, but still gave something to make thing happen.

Yah. On the other hand corporate sponsors tend to move slower. Hopefully we'll find more of those. (One platinum sponsorship was initiated by a private investor.) The key to doing good now is to let people know through all channels about this. Please do so, and contact me with any other ideas you might have. Thanks, Andrei

Obviously, you can expect the rate to be higher at the beginning and at the end. But still, numbers are encouraging.

I'm a backer now, with Facebook and Amazon accounts it was real quick and simple. My evil plan is the fact of organizing this conference will bring more people's attention to the language, more adopters and developers, so the implementation will get better and better faster.

Looking at the graph and excluding the super-villains (who are they?) the current pool seems close to empty. There will probably be an end spurt if the goals seems in sight, but as it stand I don't see this happening. My reason for not having pledged: Too expensive: flight + ticket. I will pledge 100$ if that would mean videos.

Looking at the graph and excluding the super-villains (who are they?) the current pool seems close to empty.
We currently have one generous $5K contribution from Andrew Edwards (an enlisted US Marine) and another one from Sociomantic.com. Since Andrew is not competing for branding or recruiting, we're considering offering one extra Kryptonite slot should we receive requests. Excluding the large contributions is actually not indicative because most conferences actually finance via sponsorships.
There will probably be an end spurt if the goals seems in sight, but as
it stand I don't see this happening.
The way I see it, we have 16 firm early bird attendees, and we're six corporate sponsorships away from reaching our goal. We must make this happen. One thing we could all do is to mention the conference to our recruiting managers. This is a golden opportunity to recruit straight in the Bay Area. A contribution as simple as offering a conference room for three days would mean huge goodwill in the D community for next to no cost to the company.
My reason for not having pledged:
 Too expensive: flight + ticket.
I will pledge 100$ if that would mean videos.
Understood. Note that if you submit a talk proposal, it's possible (no promise though at this point) we'd be able to defray transportation costs. Andrei

What's up with WEB SUPPORTER being a US only thing?

It's not really. The t-shirt at "DON'T LOSE YOUR SHIRT" is US-only unless you pay for shipping, and WEB SUPPORTER inherits that. You can support it regardless of your location. You just don't get free shipping for the t-shirt outside of the US. - Jonathan M Davis

We did it! Congratulations to everyone who helped and to the entire D community! Now let's get to work - we've got a lot of planning to do. Please start thinking about submitting a talk proposal (title, abstract, and bio). Andrei
