Note that these figures likely underestimate the user base by quite a bit, since LDC is also available from various package manager repos.
I've often wished they'd list number of downloads on the traffic graph and stats page, not sure why it's not there but only in this API that this app is calling.

Yeah GH is not good with that. The API is designed to the people who have a facade for the product either on their own site or on the .io site. SourceForge is better for the distribution; they have plenty of mirrors in foreign countries (the cloud existed before the cloud...) and DL count is well displayed. Despite of the critism they've got since once one year, this is a fact, distribution is still a SF strength. The GH "thing" is clearly more collaboration-social.
