(Disclaimer: I only skimmed it.) That must deal with the emotional reaction to trolling, but I have none. By that standard one would hardly find the above off-topic inside a thread about D's participation to GSoC 2011. Yet this morning the post was buried at the end of the thread with 13 downvotes canceling 14 upvotes. This is particularly cynical because at the end of the day it's about some students making some money through the summer working on something they find fun. If e.g. the competing language Go would have a summer of code proposal and discussion, I'd find it heinous of me to try to make that information disappear or otherwise drive people away. Also, the GtkD announcement I made last night was deleted. I just emailed moderators about it. Leaving aside the fact that I'm doing what the authors of GtkD ought to be doing, I suspect moderators would automatically or semi-automatically delete a post if 10-20 users would click on "spam" for it. Are you saying all this drama regarding D in Reddit is mostly because it's D and a particular someone with an agenda regarding D, and is not the general ambiance of Reddit? Because I rarely hear about or follow Reddit links outside of the D NG, but when I do and check the discussions there, there is always some controversy or flaming going on. I was starting to grow the impression that Reddit is a huge troll cave (thus furthering my desire to avoid it), so correct me if I'm wrong. There is nothing wrong with controversy. There are definitely subjects which result in flaming and crappy discussion, but reddit is a News or "Cool places to go" kind of website. Unlike other sites (digg) when you click an article you are taken to the page, not the comments.

Drama is always present where people are, but the particular hubbub surrounding D in reddit is largely (if not exclusively) the handiwork of one person (id iLiekCaeks). That person spares no effort to defame D and often Walter on reddit: brings D with a negative connotation with every remote opportunity; shows up ready to pick a fight (e.g. "how about that Tango vs. Phobos disaster?") every single time D is being discussed in any way, shape, or form; replies to every one of Walter's posts and finds issues with virtually everything he says. He is technically competent, stays current with D developments, and in fact could have many good points to make if he wanted to. My staunch approach is finding unity and conciliation; I have recently had conversations with that person that revealed that our views are considerably more aligned than it might seem. Even he seemed to agree, with varied levels of grudginess, with some of the language design decisions that inevitably forge compromises because they need to satisfy conflicting requirements. At the end of the day, professionals will understand there are things that can't be disagreed about and other things in which reasonable people can disagree.

Generally reddit has the nice property that articles towards the top are relatively informative. It is a source of information used by many professionals and therefore a very appropriate place for sharing D-related news to the larger community. Top-rated comments may be often informative but are occasionally just funny. Reddit can be manipulated because their policy allows creating unlimited accounts and keeps them entirely private. That makes it relatively easy for a determined individual to use several accounts to comment, upvote, and downvote news. Case in point: I have recently made four submissions to reddit: GTK+, iPad2 contest, GSoC 2011, and the Mago debugger. Of these, three have been classified as spam, even though they actually have been on the site, upvoted, and discussed mostly positively for hours. What I infer happens is that if enough accounts classify an article as "spam", the spam detector automatically bans the article. If that hypothesis is true, a determined individual who is willing to spend time on that kind of activity can effectively make an article disappear. I had to write the moderators to have the articles reinstated, but that happened only a day later when their novelty had already decayed. One thing that I find a bit odd is that Walter and I need to do most of this all by ourselves, although there's significant pressure for us to do many other things for D. For example, after having suggested that the GTK+ news is shared on reddit and after having seen that not one soul cares to do that, I posted the article myself, followed up with moderators (twice) when it was manipulated into deletion, and made sure the article was reinstated. Speaking of GtkD, I have difficulty understanding someone who is confident and persistent enough to carry through a major piece of work, yet refuses to take a simple step towards letting others know about it. Also, I get a good chuckle when seeing the occasional "I'm ready to do anything, how can I help D?" thread on digitalmars.D. Such is human nature. Thanks, Andrei

Good point. I should also add that it's a possibility that an article is classified as spam if it receives many positive votes in a short time from the same IP or something. Such votes could come from a well-intended or not-so-well-intended person and are bad either way. Also, if I were reddit I'd prefer accuracy to coverage, which means it's better if the occasional good article is classified as spam Anyway, I'm not up to improve the Internet here. But I do believe what we could and should to is to improve D and people's views on it. Andrei

That page is hillarious! So 100 people get to have redditroll, at $30, that makes for $3000 in total sales, for something that obviously took more than $3000 to create (based on the screenshots). Either that page is complete BS, or someone stole something. I'm leaning towards the former. But I've also seen people try to say they wrote a slightly modified open office because they were "sick of paying the microsoft tax!", so it could be the latter also. -Steve

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't post a link to reddit, or any similar site, because I don't read/use one, thus I'm not even familiar with the specifics of how the site works, it's environment and culture. Actually the only generic (and technical) news website I follow is Slashdot. I haven't yet felt motivated to read Reddit (for D or otherwise) or any other similar site. I'm not saying this is the best approach, even for me personally, nor that Reddit is not popular or important, I agree it likely is. But I just haven't found Reddit or some other site or site usage that works for me, that I feel interested in following. And thus I wouldn't be very comfortable participating in such a site as producer only (posting links), but not a consumer (following feeds?). -- Bruno Medeiros - Software Engineer

Trying to give the impression that I'm responsible for Tango's choice of license isn't one of them. To reiterate: 1. None of Phobos is or ever was BSD licensed. 2. I never suggested to the Tango devs that they use BSD. 3. The Tango devs never asked me what license to use and never included me in any discussion about it. 4. I have offered to them the ability to adapt any Phobos module to Tango and relicense it as necessary for anything I have the right to do so.

I didn't say all his points were good. The Tango mess is just miscommunication and rumours flying left and right, and I do applaud you for persistently trying to clear it up.

I've never had an emotional response to such posts but I'd be hard pressed to gather insight tidbits from them. He has technical knowledge and follows developments in D with a zeal worth of a nobler cause, but all he tries is to manipulate everything and everyone to make D look bad and to derail any constructive discussion. I'm surprised you are falling for that. His recent longer rants reveal some quite interesting personality issues and give insights into his ulterior motives and their origins. Probably an interesting case for a social psychologist. Anyway, just like in the case of 'retard', the main annoyance to me is wasted time on such a low signal/noise ratio. Reddit is difficult to browse as is. One of these days I'll spend 15 minutes finding and installing a good killfile-like reddit browser extension. (Does anyone know of one?) Andrei

killfile-like? You mean with an option to ignore posts from certain
users? This should do the trick:

http://reddit.honestbleeps.com/
```User Tagger - now with ignore!
Allows you to set a tag and highlight color for any user on reddit
that is applied whenever you see their name. New in v1.1 - also
*allows you to ignore comments/posts from users you don't like*! ```
Yeah, the next step is to label him a psycho and put into a nuthouse.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Enhancement Install that, click the underscore next to one of his postings, enter a tag (doesn't matter what it is) and check 'ignore'. Refresh, and his postings will be replaced with "this user has been ignored". If you want something stronger, you can set it to remove the entire comment block.
That's perfect. One of D's biggest problems are these nutheads. Unfortunately this place isn't unique in any way, I meet these at work too. Often these are in charge of some major open source project like the gnu libc. I hope Andrei's corporation won't ever been hiring these folks. Bruno and Google probably also use their search results and AI competence to block his job applications. In my opinion the best would be if these sick people wouldn't work at all as computer engineers. Preferably they could stay employed and die of starvation or commit a suicide. The world doesn't need them. I'd say they don't even deserve a normal life with benefits such as a girlfriend, but then again these are lonely university dropout nerds living in their parent's basement, still using old CRT tubes and ranting about their superiority on internet forums.
I was d|owns but that name was stupid. Got the idea for FeepingCreature in the NHD, checked on Slashdot and it wasn't taken. Then I went ahead and standardized on that across all my accounts. I'm not wm4 either :-)
I do to. Why do you like cakes?
Really I think IlikeCakes has been fairly healthy criticism. For the most part
he sounds like a Tango user who is pissed because D2 no longer supports it. But
he generally does bring true issues forth. He is also fairly informed on the
current status of D, but isn't actually using it to have accurate count of real
issues.
Leave him alone, he may have a vendetta against D, but at least he hasn't been
petty, at least I don't think he is down voting all posts about D.
Thank god that you're not mentally ill or something. Your post sounds totally sane. Just like having sock-puppets at reddit to downvote D critics is totally sane.
