digitalmars.D - This just in: authorless TDPL becomes collector's edition

Due to a pretty odd mistake at the printer, the first 1000 copies of
TDPL will not have the name of the author on their cover. (The name
still appears on the back cover and the spine.)

The history of printing is rife with rare printing mistakes that have
become collector's editions. Preorder now to be among the first 1000
readers who get the authorless TDPL edition.

Wish it was a ploy! It's a mistake, which my editor and I joked about reframing as a positive. Andrei

Yes, I got it :) My assertion was not serious as well. "Buy within the next hour, and we'll send you a second TDPL ABSOLUTELY FREE!! (+$49.95 S+H)" I hope at least you get royalties for those, even though your name isn't on the front cover :) -Steve

Most assuredly, unless you're outside of the US. The publisher is trying to avoid sending any copy outside the States so as to not confuse foreign markets. I think I should try to actually convince my editor to not do that. Andrei

Where to find this PDF version? I can only see the contents, excerpt from first chapter, and the index. And I can't stand waiting for my paper copy in its long way to PL.

When you get the book it has an access code to download the PDF book from Safari. But you need the book first :-) -=mike=-

Yes you can download the PDF. If you look at the last page of TDPL there is instructions. Basically you request a PDF and the PDF is generated with your name and email address as a footer on each page. Safari then emails you the webpage you can download it from. You just need to signup for the trial period. -=mike=-

Well, they don't seem to think downloading the pdf is part of the deal - only reading it online for the 30 days (which, of course, is pretty much useless). Their response: -------------- Thank you for contacting Safari Books. I'm very sorry for the confusion. The coupon provided in the book is only to read the book online and try out our service. the coupon does not include the ability to download the book from the website. Unfortunately, due to restrictions placed on us by the publisher, we can not make an electronic copy of the book available in such a manner. The line that you referenced is not supposed to be associated with the coupon offer. Instead, it is a marketing piece to advertise our service with the coupon being the chance to try it our for free. That's the iPad edition :o). Now seriously, what happens is that what you see is exactly what went to the printer. I can configure colors for a color edition, but for now the publisher asked me for black and white. Andrei

That's too bad. I can understand that the publisher want it in black and withe but the PDF, it would have been nice to the PDF in color. -- /Jacob Carlborg

Maybe the color PDF will be another collectors item ;-) -=mike=-

we only get 45 days free access to the download, so I hope they allow a colour version soon. -Rory

Is it the whole book or a chapter? All I got there is: "You have not requested any downloads. Click the download icon in the Content Reader toolbar to redeem download tokens and request content for offline viewing." And download icons are only for chapters. Each costs one token, but I got only one "promotional token" which will expire in 9 days. -- serg.

It was the whole book My trial period has expired so I can't re-check. I couldn't download it right away. The pdf was watermarked with my name and I was sent an email to allow me to download the finished book.

Just got my authorless copy from the local bookstore, they have several more of those in stock at their little C++ corner :) I'm looking forward to reading it.

I received my collector's edition yesterday, and I'm telling you, with all this hype, it had better be worth something in 40 years' time. ;) I got it just in time, too. I'm going to Canada for a conference tomorrow, and it'll be perfect reading material during the long flight across the Atlantic. I've read the first two chapters already, and I have to say it's a thoroughly enjoyable read. The examples are good, the colloquial style makes the material more interesting (as if it wasn't interesting to begin with!), and the rapid-fire puns are delivered in style. ;) Well done! -Lars

Strangely enough, the InformIT pre-purchase print books haven't shipped yet, the book is still listed as in Rough Cut status. Wonder how much longer it will take. -- Bruno Medeiros - Software Engineer

When I bought mine it still said rough cut, but I received the collector's edition.

You got yours already? That's odd. Hum, I checked the InformIT again, search for TDPL, and there are two "books" listed, the roughs cuts, and final one. That's odd, only the final one should appear. Do you know which one you purchased, are you sure it was the rough cuts? -- Bruno Medeiros - Software Engineer

Okay it wasn't rough cuts, I went to andre's site which used to show a huge picture of his kid with the book and clicked on a link to informit from there, that page seems to have changed but here the link to informit: http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321635361 I clicked on the Buy button next to the Book. Was shipped within 24 hours, got it within 7 days or so and I'm in South Africa (Amazon says it takes a month to deliver).

Ah, that explains it. Anyways I contacted InformIT/SafariBooks support, and they sorted it out, I now have the final version listed in my account, and they said the print book has been ordered. Dunno when it will arrive, but it should be too late from now. (In any case I'm not in any particular hurry to read it, not that I'm not interested, its just that I'm quite busy, and particularly I'm still in the middle of reading two other books :p ). -- Bruno Medeiros - Software Engineer

Ok, just got mine. Not a "collectors edition", although it seems at the moment this version is the rarer one :P Anyways, now I "just" need to find the time to read the book... :o -- Bruno Medeiros - Software Engineer

Do actually pay for a safari subscription? I didn't have a safari account before this, and I'm running into the same problem as strtr, so I'm wondering if that's the difference. Though if that's the case, it seems pretty messed up to me. I have no interest in shelling out on a safari subscription to get what is supposed to be a free download. - Jonathan M Davis

I didn't have a subscription - just the free 30-day by entering the access code printed in the back of TDPL. -=mike=-

*Sigh* It was reasonable guess, even if it was wrong. I guess that Safari just loves you and hates us then. ;) Maybe I should contact them and complain (about the problem, not that it loves you). - Jonathan M Davis
