I've used DMD on Linux, for quite some time, and still do partly. But most of the D stuff I do now, is compiled with GDC. So: +1 Linux -- dmd +1 Linux -- gdc +1 Windows -- dmd (rare, though) Alex John Reimer wrote:Let's have show of hands for which OS you use D on. myself: +1 Linux -- dmd +1 WinXP -- dmd Just starting to use gdc soon. -JJR

Please folks, DSource is overflowing with forums in which a poll question can be attached to any thread. Let's use one. I set one up under the "General" discussion thread: http://www.dsource.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2055 Please no more replies here. Someone can post the results here after a week or so. --bb

Well, that sort of leave out anyone who doesn't use forums. I don't use them. This is because I find them a total pain to use, because of several things: 1: the only access to them is a web page 2: it requires a large amount of excess bandwidth (images, forms, etc.) 3: the pages require an active connection to work (I don't have this) 4: No convenient way to save posts for later reading. 5: No threading. 6: I could go on... Thank you Walter for using NNTP!!!

I get bonked here now and then for using NNTP rather than some forum software. The trouble is, I've never found any forum software that is as good as the old newsgroup system. They add lots of fancy formatting, pretty displays, and omit the useful features. One item you didn't mention is the forum software's need for registration and captchas. Yuk. For me the ideal setup is forum software that is accessible through both a pretty web interface, and through NNTP. We've got an approximation to that with the sucky web interface, but as you are all aware, it stinks. For unknown reasons, however, it is the best available. One inexplicably nice thing about having our own digitalmars news server for NNTP is the spammers haven't found us. Sure, every once in a while we get spammed, but it's not enough to be a problem.

It would be good to have there as well. But I don't think the same number of users exist on dsource as do here. You can start this poll on dsource if you want. I'd be interested to see the results. :) -JJR

Hmmm... strange. I've found fairly good support on linux... except for sequencers. :P I'm not overly infantiated with Linux, but I like having the alternative, and I'm getting more and more frustrated with being locked in by the other OS. :) -JJR

I never need to worry about that kind of thing <g>, My Linux box has a power cord, a network cord, and a monitor that gets plugged in about every other month. Anything that requires a GUI gets done on the Win box, the rest mostly goes to the Linux box. Oh well thats just me.

Have you seen the linux to arm-wince-pe crosscompiler I made? There are posts in D.gnu about it. It's not perfect but it seems to work for a large subset of D so far. Let me know if you need me to upload it somewhere, as I never obtained permanent hosting.
