I'd be fine with front/back.  Not quite as nice as first/last, but
it's better than head/toe.

Btw, I like head/last because it _isn't_ symmetrical and both 4 characters  
long. I'm the kind of programmer that lines up all my variable  
declerations, etc. Porbably because I do some design work now and then as  
well :-)

Pick one and stick with it.  That is all I would suggest.

If someone takes major offense to it, they could alias it to their 
preference, right?  I've been dabbling with Objective-C while waiting 
for the DMD/GDC/LDC thunking to end, so my D is getting slightly rusty.

Not really, because these names will be used as members of hundreds of
different user-created range structs.
There's no way to make a generic alias for a member of even one struct
let alone hundreds of different ones.

Just thinking about what will happen when we get containers
integrating these kind of ranges.  Like a deque.  With current
nomenclature we might end up with names like popHead and popToe.
Both sound kinda... gross.

Now if we are about to settle for front and back, how about following 
STL all the way through and using popFront and popBack? That would make 
for a very clean nomenclature.
