Overall, I like them. I agree that it's not intuitive that it's a "d", but I don't think that's a strong drawback, if all you want is something cool to put on a shirt or coffee cup. In the last picture, I don't think the top and bottom lines are parallel, so it's making it look like weird perspective.

I think it would a good idea to create a form so people can select one logo among those seven designs. And by that, I would be able to apply required modifications based on the thoughtful feedbacks mentioned above by Shammah & Chris.

The main thing to change would be to make the "hooks" on each
face of the cube have a stronger or more obvious 'D' shape though.

Jonathan mentioned the logo doesn't make him think about D. My
interpretation of the logo is the following. It's three equal and
intertwined pieces :
- the 'three' parts represent Ds no compromise between
convenience, modeling power and efficiency. If you put the logo
aside those statements I think it's pretty obvious.
- parts are the same, meaning the language is balanced properly
with none of these properties outweighing the other ones.
- parts are intertwined (at least in the logo I prefer), each
design choice interacts nicely with the other ones.
- it has D in it, although a bit hard to see I agree.
- the logo looks sophisticated, which D is obviously.

So I think it conveys some of the ideas behind D.
Rust's logo emphasis security and strongness.
Python's logo emphasis on flexibility and malleability.
Java's logo emphasis on ... coffee breaks :)

Anyways, feel free to provide some feedback in the form, let's
see the outcome in one week.

part of the brand and the brand is more than the logo. Although D
doesn't really have an organized brand (at least as yet), the "letter D

closest thing to a brand D has. There is also the issue of the D stick
 figure as a mascot.

Rust and Go may not have the world's best brands, but they have a more
joined up brand image than that of D. Just look at rust-lang.org and
golang.org alongside dlang.org. Creating a strong brand is not easy, and
it isn't just marketing hype; it is about looking at all aspects of
public facing material: colou?rs, shapes, images, logos, fonts, layout,
mascots, history,… A strong brand is a huge asset.

The current D logo has a lot of history and a surprising public (as in
programmer) awareness. This is an intangible asset not to be thrown
 away.

We have had proposals for a new logo, a new website. I have no problem
with this, but just as when dlang.org split off from Digital Mars, there
needs to be thought about the whole brand, especially if you want to get
 traction of D usage.

I agree with Russel. I think we've had good success with the D With Moons logo, and it's use is pervasive and recognizable as being D.

I do think it's great that you and others are taking the initiative and doing the work to improve things! But, and I hate to rain on things, but I really like the existing logo and don't think it needs improvement. I have thought about making it into a gif, though, that very subtly pulses, or something, like a video made of a tree where the leaves move slightly in the wind. My idea would be the planet in the bottom half of the background would appear to be slowly rotating, suggestive of the D and the moons being in orbit.

I'll first admit I'm not fond of the font. I do agree with a sans serif

think a wider counter definitely looks better with these proportions.
What's the font in the current logo?

I don't know for sure, but I don't think its from a named font, rather it is probably hand drawn. (Designers tend to create a lot of partial fonts for customers because of licensing issues.) Very few typefaces have Ds that are wider that they are tall, like the one in the current logo appears.
The top two, I'm not sure how I feel about the hard edges. More
importantly, though, I don't think there's enough contrast between the
red/pink and the white, so the "D" is rather hard to see. How about
going darker on those? Another option might be to give the letter a
 thin outline.

The main red that I chose to use in all the variations so far is #DD0000, which was entirely a coincidence, but I do like the association. In those top two images, 90% of the time they took to draw was in the selection of a shade of pink that I thought contrasted nicely between the red and the white, but that is obviously very subjective.
The bottom six, I'm not keen on the use of black. I find it clashes
harshly with the white and red. But changing the white would muddle the
contrast with red, so maybe ease the black back to something a bit more
mild...say, #1F252B? The shadows on the moons are nice, though; gives
them some interest and lightening the black would mess with that...
maybe make the shadows a darker red? Not sure on that part.

What is Black, white an Red all over? There is a named colour called Outer Space (#414A4C), but I think its meant as a shade of wax crayon. It doesn't look too bad however with, as you suggested, redder shadows on the moons.

Of all these, I find that I like the bottom right one the most.

I divided the options into left and right based on the emotion that I felt the angle of the shadow on the moon suggested, the left side are the ones that I felt were happy and optimistic, the right side the sadder ones, so I'm very surprised that anyone would pick a favourite from the right side oO
 One
thing that could improve, though, is the planet's margin shouldn't be
white; it clashes with the D. Maybe a slight reddening of the white band
 should fix it.

Good call, but quick experimentation has not found just the right colour yet. It seems that in order not to disappear it needs to get darker.
Also, it may help if the margin of the shadows on the
moons were made a tad softer -- make the edge between the two halves of
each moon just a little less sharp.

I like this idea.

The circle O doodle could be a turned into the site favicon. I see you did a prettier version of the existing GDC logo, I think the G in that looks too much like C. I think it would be better using the first G in the top left hand corner on the first line (GGDCC).

Or maybe the second...

Gs can be tricky to draw (yes, these are drawn not from an existing font). The black letters at the top use different thicknesses for the horizontal and vertical strokes, so that G would look out of place with the red letters. Maybe something like that, but without the top (that is, instead of an "overhead corner view" of the box, you'd be level with the box and looking at just two sides ... maybe with a some more emphasis on the D side) I think any logo design really needs to incorporate Mars and Phobos and probably should be just red and white (preferably flat shaded to work with most "modern" logos). But that's just my thoughts as a non-designer.

The circle O doodle could be a turned into the site favicon. I see you did a prettier version of the existing GDC logo, I think the G in that looks too much like C. I think it would be better using the first G in the top left hand corner on the first line (GGDCC). Not sure where the bottom right logo is going. :) Regards Iain

Yeah, the one on the 3rd row next to GDC looks fantastic to me. I'd feel happy slapping that on my website to advertise that it runs on D. (obviously, though, I wouldn't want to use a non-standard logo, so it'd have to be accepted first) That's just my opinion though. Great work :)

More to the point, one doesn't just change a logo (*). The logo is a
part of the brand and the brand is more than the logo. Although D
doesn't really have an organized brand (at least as yet), the "letter D

closest thing to a brand D has.

I forgot about these designs also: http://wendlerchristoph.wordpress.com/designs-for-d/

Gs can be tricky to draw (yes, these are drawn not from an existing font). The black letters at the top use different thicknesses for the horizontal and vertical strokes, so that G would look out of place with the red letters. Here are some quick variations (just the old red G with bits on ^^). https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3i8FWPuOpryb2tmc2ZMdVMwcEE/edit A...

Having quickly patched it together in gimp, I'm leaning on either on the right hand side. The G on the bottom left could be nice next to the D in a strange perspective (eg: a 3D box). At the same time I agree with Walter on the Moons logo. But I'd like to make it slightly unique. Maybe a Gibbous Moon. :) http://darkhorizons.emissionline.com/images/moon-ha2l.jpg You could almost make out a G to fir into that...

Personally, I like the ones we have now, the ones you linked don't improve it in my opinion.

In general, I rather like these, but I have some comments. I'll first admit I'm not fond of the font. I do agree with a sans serif with fairly thick stroke, but I don't like the vertical stress and I think a wider counter definitely looks better with these proportions. What's the font in the current logo? The top two, I'm not sure how I feel about the hard edges. More importantly, though, I don't think there's enough contrast between the red/pink and the white, so the "D" is rather hard to see. How about going darker on those? Another option might be to give the letter a thin outline. The bottom six, I'm not keen on the use of black. I find it clashes harshly with the white and red. But changing the white would muddle the contrast with red, so maybe ease the black back to something a bit more mild...say, #1F252B? The shadows on the moons are nice, though; gives them some interest and lightening the black would mess with that... maybe make the shadows a darker red? Not sure on that part. -Wyatt

Of all these, I find that I like the bottom right one the most. One thing that could improve, though, is the planet's margin shouldn't be white; it clashes with the D. Maybe a slight reddening of the white band should fix it. Also, it may help if the margin of the shadows on the moons were made a tad softer -- make the edge between the two halves of each moon just a little less sharp. I personally like the current one: - I like how mars looks like its a reflection in the logo's background. - I dislike how the moon mixes with the "D" As for my opinion about your work, I'm inclined to agree with Wyatt's and H. S. Teoh's comments.
