Walter, the archive webpages did the trick. Google has finally indexed 
the original D newsgroup (news://news.digitalmars.com/D)!

It's probably easiest to use through the custom search page:
http://www.digitalmars.com/advancedsearch.html

Now about those newer newsgroups... ;)
