On both machines with which I access this ng, the newsreader (the filthy Outlook Express) regularly reports that there are x messages not downloaded (atm it's 12). Is there something on the ng server that is sniffing out advertisiting, viruses and other filth posted by spamming tossers, and we are being protected from, or is there something wrong with my newsreader and I'm missing potentially important messages. Anyone experience the same thing? Matthew

(download all). The 12 message are probably old. D rarely has spam, but I doubt that's due to a filter. -Anderson

I've tried all the settings, and it still happens. And the settings are different on the two machines. :(

Matt, I'm afraid it's of not much help, but my OE says I have 14076 messages not downloaded... :) (I feel too weak even to try looking after what to hit here...) Cheers, Sz. Yeah it's a weird one. I'm certain that the bulk of those that you mention are old messages. On one of my machines I deleted the account and when I brought it back there was a similar number that were not downloaded. However, what I get on the main machine, which gets kept up to date, is that every couple of days there are a handful of "not dowloaded"s, which makes me wonder whether my OE, or the DM server, is filtering them. Sometimes I read a message and it's clearly been an answer to one I've not seen, so I might be missing important things (since all you folks have words of gold!) Oh well, other things are calling me away ... In this case, I have 11549 messages downloaded, 0 unread. My newsreader shows some other thing that is very strange, though. All messages from 5th of March this year until 26th of October has disappeared. A few weeks ago, I had the messages to about 25th of September. Maybe Outlook Express has reached a limit? Have you tried right-clicking on the newsgroup in the tree and then selecting "Catch up"? I have no idea what this actually does, but it seems to help in these cases. Hauke

I've tried any permutation you can think of, to no avail. Guess I'll have to remain ignorant of the totality of the ng gems. ;) "Hauke Duden" <H.NS.Duden gmx.net> wrote in message news:bntgg6$1on2$1 digitaldaemon.com...Luna Kid wrote:Matt, I'm afraid it's of not much help, but my OE says I have 14076 messages not downloaded... :)

Parhaps "canceled messages" are not being download (you can cancel your own messages in mozilla)? PS - I've experienced this kinda thing on the mainstream newsgroups, so you are not alone. You should compare what you have downloaded to the website version (as it shouldn't be missing any), if possible.

clicked on (hence undownloaded) PS - I love this newsgroup because you don't get nailed for asking questions such as this one.

Interesting... When I'm not trying to learn Linix, I use Outlook Express on Windows XP. I have no such problem...I see all 18759 messages. These are the settings I have am using. Under Tools > Options > Read : News, I've removed the check mark from "Get # headers at a time". Under Tools > Options > Maintenance, ensure that only "Compact messages in the background" is checked. After this, right click on D, and choose Properties: On the Local File tab click on Reset... This will re-download all messages and you will messages on the server and keep them all, unless of course Walter or Jan starts deleting older messages from the server.

There are no plans to do that. We've got lots of disk space! What I've wanted to do for some time is to take all the D messages and convert them into html and link them all together. Doing this may finally get Google to index them <g>.
